Pre-hospital Medicine &
Terrorist attack

For a group of doctors, some
of whom had noticed practised accident medicine in years, the BMA
Headquarters in Tavistock Square was a chilling experience on July 7th
2005. The world is facing a new threat from Terrorism, gone are the days
of warnings and military targets. The dreadful truth is that anyone from
an animal rights activist to Al Quaeda might now initiate an attack of a
chemical, biological, or radiological character or use explosives almost
anywhere in the United Kingdom.
We do not intend this course
for every doctor and nurse, but we believe there is a need for those
medical and non-medical staff who may be involved in NHS Trust Emergency
Plans or be providing medical cover at public gatherings to understand
the reality of what might occur. This course looks at the Major Incident
planning in place as a result of the Civil Contingencies legislation and
what might occur.
This is a half day course
that looks at the injuries of bomb and blast, and chemical incidents. It
considers scene management, casualty decontamination, and hospital
organisation. It discusses the strengths and weaknesses of current
training. The video presentations are graphic and uncompromising.
The course costs £280 plus
VAT, but may be expanded on request to a full day by adding on a trauma
management module that requires active participation from some of the
candidates and may leave synthetic blood on their hands! The full day
course is £500 plus VAT. Protective clothing is supplied for the trauma
session.
