Extended Care in
Remote Areas

This course is in
development
This course is being designed
for those people who have a Pre-Hospital Emergency Care
certificate or equivalent qualification and who also work in
environments where evacuation to hospital could be delayed for up to
several days. It assumes that there will be supplies of drugs,
fluids, oxygen and (possibly) untrained assistants. It is ideal for
island GP's, oil rig medics, ships medical officers, and all others
who work in an isolated environment.
We see an educational vacuum
in that most Immediate Care courses assume rapid evacuation to
hospital, and most Expedition Medicine courses assume no advanced
skills. This course assumes you have some equipment, but no
radiology, operating theatre or laboratory.
We planned on running the
course in March 2004 but got in to negotiation with the Faculty of
Pre-Hospital Care at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.
They are interested in this being an accredited course. It is ground
breaking in concept. We have approached some of the world's
experts and ask what they would do in these circumstances. Putting this course together
is demanding a significant investment of time and money. We
think the course will run for 3 days and will cost about £700.
