Safety at Scene
18th & 19th December 2007 8th & 9th March 2008 Air Training Squadron HQ, Blackpool Airport Initially run in 1997 by the Lancashire Fire & Rescue International Training Centre, this course has annually drawn participants from all over the country. The course manual was first published by Elsevier Science in January 2001. That edition is now out of print but we are pleased to say that a second, completely updated edition is available as an e-book and can be ordered using ISBN 9-955131-0-1. The two day course is intensely practical, involving the use of fire extinguishers, cutting equipment on cars, railway familiarisation and an entrapment exercise. The course is not designed to turn ambulance personnel, immediate care doctors and police officers into super heroes, rather the opposite. Conventional service training has always focussed on the 1-2-3 of Safety, but joint service training at the demonstrated that problems arose for non-firefighters in the perception of what could be unsafe. Problems we had with regard to the venues appear now to have been resolved and we are hoping to offer the course at a range of venues. The price is £250 plus VAT, which is good value for two days of practical training, refreshments and lunch on both days and an e-book. The course content has been updated with new material from Network Rail and on water safety as well as new developments in vehicle safety. The course is completed with a short knowledge assessment. Accommodation is available at the Travel Inn on the airport site. Participants are advised that it is an ideal time to test their own equipment and that a level of physical fitness is required in view of the strenuous effort required during some parts of the course.
